HISTORY: Christ Church, Dayton, was presented with the Cross of Nails in 1976 for work in Dayton on racial reconciliation. After being quite active for a number of years, involvement with Coventry had gradually been phased out. Recently Christ Church has sought to renew its status as a CCN Center, building on the concern of our parish for African Students for whom we provide a house and sense of belonging as they attend the several universities in the greater Dayton area.
ACTIVITIES: Rev. Gordon Price initiated this renewal with a six-lecture series on Benedict, Coventry, the Discipline and our former CCN involvement as a Parish. Foyer groups were formed to foster the experience of using the Discipline as our "Rule".
For many years Christ Church has had a close relationship with St. George's Cathedral, the Cathedral School and the School for the Blind in Freetown, Sierra Leone. Because of our involvement, SACSL (Society for the Advancement of Culture & Welfare in Sierra Leone) was founded in 1988, and which now involves other helping groups plus governmental assistance.
A sea-container of medical and other supplies were sent to the St. George's Cathedral, the Schools and the two hospitals, which arrived in December, 2001. On January 6th the rebel uprising resulted in multiple deaths and many civilian dismemberments, especially of children who had their arms and legs cut off. These medical supplies saved many lives. The director of the Hospitals was our guest at a meeting of SACSL.
Our Center prays weekly for other CCN centres around the world. The chapel cross and our processional cross are crosses of nails formed with square, forged nails taken from the ruins of the 14th Century Coventry Cathedral following its destruction.
